Description
“The Salma” is a portrait of a contemporary Moroccan woman, in opposition to oriental patterns of painting. She does not cover her face or her hair, nor does she wear the traditional costumes attributing her to religious symbols. She is neither European nor Arab. She does not try to straighten her Afro hair like most hairdressers in order to keep up with the canons of current trends. She is herself. She is powerfull, she is independent. And this is the path of female empowerment that I wanted to portray in opposition to the image of Arab women that we know in Europe from traditional paintings and their constant reproduction.
Observing my female students, my female colleagues at work, I know that Moroccan women are strong, aware of the challenges posed to them by the patriarchal world, and of their power that comes from resisting and not giving in to schemes.
