Description

The original painting was created in 2019 and was sold to a private collection.

“Moroccan woman on a motorbike” was painted in 2019. It refers to a very famous painting by the Polish artist -Wladyslaw Podkowinski – titled “Frenzy of Exultation” (1894), which I dislike very much.
Podkowinski’s monumental painting depicts a naked woman riding an oak-stepped horse. The woman’s hair and the horse’s mane are blowing in the wind…. and their faces in a wild frenzy…. It’s hard not to see what it’s about. Why don’t I like it? Because it depicts the woman objectively, as an object of sexual fantasy, as it has been for centuries of painting, as if there is no other subject on the whole world but the naked woman….
In opposition to this image, I wanted to portray a woman of power, not a woman object. The woman of power is covered entirely and instead of an ecstatic horse she rides a modern motorbike, as a symbol of independence, power and freedom. Everything takes place in the camouflage of Moroccan tradition, i.e. the zellige decoration…. because even a woman stuck in the traditional system can break the stereotypes of thinking.
